Communication as an art form

All of us who spend time and energy seeking to communicate with and persuade others can benefit from Art & Copy, a film about "really good advertising" made by documentary filmmaker Doug Pray, which I saw last night in New York City.

Here, Doug talks about his experience making the film:

Going into it, I was very cynical … thinking... it’s about commerce, and it’s about money, and it’s about moving product. And, of course, it is, on the surface. But deep down inside … what a cool art it is to have to take something and communicate it in three words and have it reach millions of people … it’s a very high goal. And I started kind of appreciating that craft and how interesting that is, and seeing that as a similar challenge that all artists have … I began to get an appreciation for the real craft of really good advertising. It’s kind of an amazing thing they do – because they get to us. And that’s what all artists do – all artists – you want to look at a painting and be moved by it.
